GAMIFIED LEARNING
Network Rail Health and Safety

Network Rail – Gamification
The Journey – a Health and Safety app-based game to introduce gamification to the Year 1 Network Rail Engineering Apprenticeship.
The game will support the existing Health and Safety curriculum, Network Rail’s Life Saving Rules and Behaviours, encouraging engagement with the subject matter and safety culture through competition, challenge and innovative learning technology.
The purpose of the game is for players to maintain all Network Rail Routes, through the successful completion of challenges faced along the way. A point system will be used throughout the game, players should strive to complete the game with the highest points balance, points will be accrued through correctly answering questions, completing time trials, applying understanding of the subject matter to workplace based scenarios and collaboration with colleagues

Project Concept
This Health and Safety game is to be played on a tablet by Network Rail Apprentices who have just started their three year Apprenticeship training at Westwood. They will stay at Westwood for 6 months, then go back to their Depots, and for years 2 and 3 they will train at HMS Sultan in Portsmouth. The idea is that we’ll build on the game later to develop it further for years 2 and 3, but also that Apprentices will enjoy it so much that they continue playing it in their spare time.
We were tasked with analysing the user experience alongside the curriculum content in relation to the delivery of health and safety at Westwood training centre Network Rail. This was in preparation for the development of a game focused learning product.
We applied a range of different techniques and methods in the development of the UX design process, gathering information from both the users and their trainers.
We were given access to the curriculum and the overall project outline this was provided by the client.
